The College Scam, A Follow-up
Let me start off by saying, “V, you’re starting to speak to me again!”
Those of you who have read some of my earlier works know that one of the last things I will probably ever say is that college is anything other than a scam. I just love to point it out when somebody who people actually pay attention to agrees with me.
Now, some of you may wonder if I myself am in college. The answer to that question would be “yes.” I’m a hypocrite, I know. But that’s the beauty of this scam, you basically have to go along with it.
Think of what college used to be. It was a rarity that people even went. Now, the guy with the degree is going to get the job. “I went to college so I only want to hire people who got that education, too!”
There’s the rub!
Honestly, as a Computer Science major, I will have not learned nearly as much about my field in my four years of classes as I have taught myself beforehand, but that BS (stands for ‘Bachelor of Science’ but is read ‘bullshit’) is going get me a job….I hope.
(Don’t get wrong, I know some majors really do need the extra years of school!)
Colleges get your tuition, and in turn, if you succeed, you become their commercial. They love to point out that one of their alumni founded Google or currently owns five companies and seven jets. They eat it up. “Look here! You can have that if you come here!” Now, you might wonder how scholarships come into play. I am not going to say that people who get them don’t deserve them because I know they earned it. I merely am going to point out how it does not dampen profit. Scholarships are investments in the future. The colleges pick students who they think will end up doing the best in life, the best advertisements. Now, if they do very well, and let’s talk small here for the sake of argument, they inspire four people to come to the same college they went to, then that’s four for the price of one.
Jackpot!
Now, what can we do about it? I don’t know. Maybe there’s a solution, but I haven’t figured it out, so don’t go on a violent rampage and say I told you to because I will deny ever talking to you.
However, those of us who have to pay for college remember this, complain about everything that doesn’t deliver. If your dorm room is too hot or cold, complain! If your professor cancels a lot of classes, complain! If you *insert fair scenario here*, complain! Don’t be afraid to even seek out the dean of your school. After all, whether or not you piss him/her off you still have to pay the same amount for tuition!
